THE RIPTIDE’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL

riptide 200The Riptide, the last bar in San Francisco before the Farallone Islands, has been recording video of its bands and publishing the performances on YouTube.  The result has been an extensive video collection of  local and not so local bands that have played the Rip.  Find them all by searching riptidesf in YouTube.

Red Meat, East Bay Grease, Porkchop Express, Burning Embers, Joe Goldmark and the Seducers, and the now-disbanded Plain High Drifters are among the locals.  Big Smith and Rancho Deluxe are among the visitors.  Several clips are from Anna’s Monday night open mics. (more…)

ALASKA SENATOR SUPPORTS INTERNET USAGE FEES

Ted Stevens is known as the long-serving Alaskan Senator who escaped corruption charges when Justice Department prosecutors bungled what was apparently an air-tight case.  He needs to be better known as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation who supports Internet usage fees.  The Chairman’s lack of technical comprehension shines in a speech about the “Innernets” which is on YouTube.  That speech has been remixed into this five-star video that has provided over 1 million people with a good laugh a Senator Peabrain’s expense.

ANOTHER “RANDOM RULES” BAND

Singer-songwriter Megan Barton sent in her entry for a band and CD randomly created by accessing Wikipedia for the band name, Flickr for the cover art and Quotations Page for the CD’s title.  Wikipedia randomly named her band Any Given Saturday after a race horse, and quotations page gave her Will Rogers’, “An onion can make people cry, but there has never been a vegetable invented to make them laugh.”

These imaginary CD’s were submitted by HWS News readers who followed the guidelines published in the last issue about randomly accessing Wikipedia for the name of their invisible band, Flickr for cover art and Quotations Page for CD titles.  It is surprising to see just how authentic looking random can be.
