Fans of country can look forward to the Western Swing Out Weekender this Memorial Day weekend in Tehachapi, 40 miles southeast of Bakersfield. It runs from May 25th–28th with a top-notch selection of bands on Saturday and Sunday.
These bands are drawn mainly from Southern California, offering a chance for Northern Californians to see and hear bands who aren’t here often, or at all. Big Sandy & his Fly-Rite Boys generally find their way north twice each year, as do Petunia & the Vipers who, being from British Columbia, Canada, find their way south to the Bay Area. But beyond those bands and the Bay Area’s Mitch Polzak & the Royal Deuces and The B-Stars, the remainder in the line-up rarely plays here. Of those rare visitors, The Lucky Stars, who headline Sunday night and play two sets, are a must-see.
Friday features an all-night meet and greet at the VFW Post bar. You know drinks are cheap at Vet’s bars, right? Monday you can join the City of Tehachapi’s Annual Veterans Memorial Parade & Flag Ceremony prior to the festival’s closing events.
